Use Cases
TL;DR: Convai’s Asset Uploader lets you bring your own MetaHuman, Reallusion, and any other custom avatars from Unreal Engine into Convai’s AI Experience Ecosystem, ie. Avatar Studio and Convai Sim; no complex setup required. You start by crafting your avatar’s mind in the Convai Playground, link it with your 3D model in Unreal, and upload directly into Avatar Studio, Convai Sim, or your Unreal projects. From there, you can add actions (via Convai’s XR Animation Capture App or Epic’s Fab animations) and even drop your character into custom environments for richer, more realistic experiences. The result: fully personalized, AI-powered digital humans ready for training, simulation, and brand experiences—built once, deployed anywhere.
Watch the step by step tutorial here to get started:
Real teams don’t all look the same and your virtual humans shouldn’t either! Whether you’re building an onboarding assistant, a tour guide, a retail associate, or a brand ambassador, custom avatars lift engagement, memorability, and trust. You can reflect uniforms, age ranges, cultures, and roles; you can also tune body language and voice to match context (calm for healthcare, energetic for retail, authoritative for security). The result: better training outcomes and richer customer interactions.
Convai is an end‑to‑end platform for AI characters. You author the “mind” in the Convai Playground—language, voice, knowledge, memory, and behavior, and then drop that character into high‑quality avatars and interactive 3D experiences. You can go no‑code with Avatar Studio and Convai Sim for fast prototyping and deployment, or integrate directly in Unreal Engine when you want full control. The Asset Uploader ties those worlds together: it packages your custom assets and sends them to Convai—ready for web and XR.
Start in Convai Playground:
Once you like how the character thinks and talks, you’ll pair it with your visual asset. (You can do the same “mind first, visuals later” flow for both MetaHuman and Reallusion pipelines.)
In Unreal, pair your character’s “mind” to your custom avatar:
This is the moment your avatar stops being a static model and starts behaving like an AI teammate.
Furthermore, check out our detailed asset uploader documentation in case you’re struggling with any of the steps above.
Use the Asset Uploader to send your MetaHuman or Reallusion avatar from Unreal straight to Convai. The tool automates project setup, plugin integration, packaging, and upload so you can focus on quality—not build scripts.
Note: The Asset Uploader is currently available only with the Professional Plan and above. Check out the pricing page to learn more.
After upload:
Actions make your avatar do things (gesture, point, wave, inspect an object) at the right moments in conversation.
A) Drop‑in animations from Epic’s Fab
Open Fab directly inside Unreal and pull in animation packs (free and paid) to expand your library fast. Fab is Epic’s unified marketplace (successor to UE Marketplace, Sketchfab Store, and home for Quixel Megascans) and is accessible from the UE Editor’s Fab window.
B) Record your own in minutes (XR capture)
If you need brand‑specific gestures or role‑specific moves, record custom clips in VR using the Convai XR Animation Capture app on Meta Quest, then assign them to your avatars in Convai. It’s a lightweight way to build a reusable animation library, no mocap suit required. To get started, check out the detailed XR animation documentation.
There are two complementary routes:
What does the Asset Uploader actually do?
It creates a Convai‑ready Unreal project, installs required Convai plugins, compiles, packages, and uploads your asset, so it appears in Avatar Studio/Convai Sim.
Which assets are supported today?
You can upload MetaHuman, Reallusion and any other avatar easily. The page also references Scenes; review the doc for current support details.
What are the prerequisites?
Prerequisites include: Unreal Engine 5.5, a Convai API key, .NET 6.0 runtime (Console Apps), the UE 5.5 Cross‑Compile Toolchain, and Linux binaries via Epic Games Launcher.
How do I connect my custom avatar to the AI “mind”?
In Unreal, add the Convai chatbot component to your avatar Blueprint and paste your Character ID to test speech and lipsync, then upload. Both MetaHuman and Reallusion guides show this flow.
Where will my uploaded avatar show up?
In Avatar Studio under Upload Your Custom Avatar, ready to use in experiences.
Can I keep everything in Unreal?
Yes. Install the Convai Unreal plugin, set your API key, and run fully native.
Can I add animations without a mocap?
Yes. Pull animations from Fab directly inside Unreal, or record your own with the Convai XR Animation Capture app on Meta Quest.
Which plan includes the Asset Uploader?
Professional Plan and above.
Your process is simple: author the mind in Convai, bring your own MetaHuman/Reallusion visuals, pair them in Unreal, and upload—then ship a polished experience in Avatar Studio, stage dynamic practice in Convai Sim, or keep building natively in UE. When you’re ready to add nuance, layer in actions (Fab or XR capture) and environments (built‑in or custom scenes).
Start with the Asset Uploader and you’ll cut days of glue work down to minutes—so your time goes into performance, not pipelines.
